Actuary

Natalie Hebron is an actuary. Her job is about making sure her business has set aside enough money to pay current and future claims.

Read Natalie's profile Imge of an arrow

Being an actuary is all about looking at the risks a company might face, understanding what the claims costs might be and ensuring that the prices being charged are adequate to cover those costs. In a world where global warming is making severe weather events more frequent and more extreme, her job has never been more important.

Natalie explains: “The hardest part of being an actuary is looking at things with no data – like climate change. No-one really knows how this will develop. We’re trying to work it out, but it needs innovative thinking to understand how insurance will be impacted. That provides opportunities to be creative – which is unusual in an analytical role.”

Analysing information is at the heart of what Natalie does. Everything is based on the application of frameworks, processes and modelling. For example, she will need to look at multiple data sets to assess the impact of claims arising from a cluster of extreme hurricanes. Her task is to analyse the trends season by season, understand anomalies and investigate further, engaging with underwriting and claims teams to understand what they’re seeing on the ground.

She says: “This is where interacting with the business is very important. Processes will only provide so much info. You need people to help you understand what you’re seeing. A model might offer several answers. You need to use your judgement to decide which one’s right.”

Natalie came into insurance after an eight week internship as part of her maths and statistics degree. 13 exams and several years’ experience later, she loves that no day is the same, but every day requires engaging with underwriters and senior management.

The key skills she relies on every day are an aptitude for numbers, good presentation and communication abilities, attention to detail and a facility with computers. Although this is a brain-heavy job she loves the challenge and the rewards. “Though there’s always the odd emergency, there’s a pretty healthy work-life balance.”

Top Tips for Interviews

As an entry-level candidate applying for your first job, you are unlikely to have extensive relevant experience, which can sometimes cause nerves about how to present yourself for the role. However, we focus on how well you can articulate your abilities and your desire to learn.

  1. Consider the soft skills required for the job and reflect on when in your life you may have applied or learned those skills, such as through extra-curricular activities, challenges you have encountered, or other learning moments. What is your interest in this job? Why do you think you will be good at it, and what aspects do you think you will enjoy? The STAR interview method is a useful tool for answering behavioural-based questions.
  2. If the interview is over video…it may seem obvious, but before the interview, ensure your camera and speakers are working and that Zoom is downloaded onto your computer. Check the lighting to ensure it is not too bright or too dark. Consider what will be visible behind you; blur your background if you haven’t managed to tidy your room or choose a neutral background from within the relevant app.
  3. Once the interview has started, you will not be able to quickly look at the company website to read up on that one point you forgot to prepare. The interviewer will notice your eyes moving over the screen and will realise you are not focused on them. If you are writing or typing notes, please let your interviewer know so they understand why you will be looking down from time to time or at a different screen rather than at them.
  4. Above all, be yourself in the interview. We genuinely want to hear about you and what matters to you.
  5. Finally, pace yourself. If you feel nervous, take a deep breath and slow down.

WTW is the leading provider of retirement consulting and actuarial services to today’s global organisations, providing actuarial services to more of the world’s top 300 pension funds than any other company. In the UK and Europe, we are the undisputed leader, advising 93 of the FTSE 100 companies. We also advise small and mid-sized schemes, with the range of clients providing our colleagues with a broad range of opportunities. Our enviable client list covers a very wide range of companies including household names, financial institutions, and charities.

We partner with clients around the globe to determine the best approaches to pension scheme design, funding, risk management, governance, administration, and communication.

What does the Retirement team do?

The Retirement team works with trustees and sponsors of occupational pension schemes. We advise on both defined contribution (“DC”) and defined benefit (“DB”) schemes: our trainee consultant vacancies are within the DB team. The DB team helps our clients with all aspects of managing a pension scheme, from regular triennial valuation work, to cutting edge risk-reduction and scheme design projects. We often work closely with our colleagues in other teams, such as DC, investment, communications, and administration, to provide joined-up advice to our clients.

We work in partnership with our clients to help them to manage the potentially substantial risks involved with retirement benefit provision and to ensure that their benefits meet the needs of all stakeholders.

As part of the team, you will have the opportunity to work alongside some of the leading figures in the pensions industry and our unequalled client base provides boundless opportunities for creativity and innovation.

At WTW, we believe difference makes us stronger. We want our workforce to reflect the different and varied markets we operate in and to build a culture of inclusivity that makes colleagues feel welcome, valued and empowered to bring their whole selves to work every day. We are an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering an inclusive work environment throughout our organisation. We embrace all types of diversity.

You’ll have the autonomy to organise your own workload and will be strongly encouraged to innovate to make improvements to the way in which work is done and to the services we provide.

Trainee consultants at WTW benefit from all the resources and opportunities that a large company can provide, but this doesn’t come at the cost of individuality. Our award-winning development programme will equip you with the skills you need to progress in your career. During the first few years, the focus will be on technical and consulting skills, and you will follow a structured development programme consisting of a mix of classroom sessions, eLearning, webinars, recorded videos, self-study, reading and on–the-job coaching. Insurance is so much more than you think!

Are you wanting to discover more about careers that will excite, challenge and inspire you? If so, a Zurich industrial placement could be just what you’re looking for.

Forget any preconceptions you have about the insurance industry. Our one-year industrial placements give you a real job with real responsibility and a taste for life working at Zurich.

With plenty of support around you, you’ll experience how your future career might look and help us make a difference to our customers at a time when they need us the most.

Our industrial placements are ideal for students in their penultimate year of study. As well as gaining some great experience, successful completion of your industrial placement in 2025 could lead to you being offered a place on one of our graduate programmes starting in 2026.

What can I look forward to?

We provide insurance solutions for an immense range of customers: from members of the public, through small and medium sized enterprises, to local government organisations and large multinational corporations. Our actuarial teams drive the pricing and reserving for all these markets.

As part of the actuarial team, you will have the opportunity to develop whilst learning from a group of talented actuaries and analysts both within the UK team, and throughout the wider Group. Before you begin, you’ll be put in touch with a buddy who can help support you with any questions you may have about starting.

Within our General Insurance business there are two streams:

  • Actuarial reserving team - You’ll be calculating the expected level of future claims. By applying statistical techniques, analysing trends including experience against expectations, communicating business insight, and estimating capital requirements, you’ll become a valuable member of the reserving function
  • Actuarial pricing team - You’ll help to set the prices for the insurance policies we sell by calculating which risk characteristics lead to higher or lower expected claims costs. As part of this you’ll find yourself analysing profitability, improving approaches to customer segmentation, and developing market-leading pricing technology

Along with working alongside qualified actuaries, we also provide internal actuarial training to help you understand some of the other work we do, so you can get insight into work that you may not necessarily get a chance to be involved in.

What’s in it for you?

As well as joining a company that is passionate about sustainability and our customers, you can expect:

  • £21,840 salary
  • 25 days holiday plus an additional 3 volunteering days
  • You can request to swap UK bank holidays for days off that have cultural or religious significance to you
  • Full private medical cover
  • 12% company pension contribution
  • Annual company bonus

  • Discounted gadget insurance
  • Discounted technology offers

What you’ll need:

  • A strong interest in pursuing an actuarial career post-graduation, alongside maintaining office performance
