Kiera Mackay
Reporting accountant
Kiera Mackay has a very specialist role within the insurance market as a syndicate reporting accountant. Her role is to prepare financial returns for Lloyd’s which explain how the business is performing.
Read Kiera's profile
Syndicates are businesses that only operate within the Lloyd’s market. They are highly regulated entities which need to produce quarterly and annual reports that analyse whether the business is making or losing money, explain how different investments are performing, track income and money being paid out on claims and provide detail on changing tax exposures.
But despite the highly technical aspects of the role, Kiera explains that being good at maths is not a prerequisite for success.
“I liked maths at school but I wasn’t good enough to do A level. This role is more about attention to detail, problem solving and being analytical. You need to be able to spot if something doesn’t look right and explain really clearly any trends and developments in the numbers.”
In fact the biggest challenge for her has been less the technical side of the job, but more the communication. She has to walk the assets and liabilities committee through the returns and get people comfortable with the detail.
Kiera explains: “I get nervous presenting, especially when it’s a large and senior group. I’m only three years into my career so it has been a challenge. But what I really enjoy is the variety. You get to learn about all aspects of the business, what’s working well, what isn’t and why.”
Kiera came into the market having done IT at college, some financial planning roles and then an accounting and finance degree.
Her advice to people considering a career in the London market is: “Just go for it. Even if it’s not finance, there are such a wide variety of roles – in risk, exposure management, underwriting and claims. It’s great working in the City in a corporate, professional role.”
