Raza Hassan

Raza Hassan

Renewable Energy Underwriter

Graphic of an opening speech mark Graphic of a closing speech mark

Raza is an underwriter specialising in the energy sector. His job is to find cover for independent energy companies building renewable facilities like solar farms, wind farms or battery storage units.

Read Raza 's profile Imge of an arrow

For Raza, the best thing about the job is that it’s always exciting.

“It’s a really dynamic space at the moment,” he says. “The risks are changing, the tech is changing and the scale of projects is increasing. Insurance protection needs to be more specific and more bespoke. We’re living in a world in which the renewable energy sector is still very new.”

But renewable energy is not where Raza began his career.

Having dropped out of university, Raza sought a role in which a degree was not a necessity. Accounting and air traffic control were both high on his list but then he found insurance.

“Insurance sounded cool,” Raza remembers. “I did some research, found out about Lloyd’s of London and the City and got a first job working for a car insurance operation in Southampton. My funds had dried up so I needed to earn.”

Having settled into his new role, Raza set about contacting underwriters in the London insurance market.

Growing up in Pakistan, Raza was all too aware of the potentially unreliable nature of electricity. Having lived with the consequences of so-called ‘load-shedding’ when electricity suppliers cut power to reduce demand, Raza had a strong interest in the energy sector which made him a perfect fit for a career as an energy insurance broker.

For Raza, the prospect of working in the energy sector as it undergoes the transition to cleaner forms of power is an exciting one.

Why not take a look at some of our graduate profiles to see what they have been up to since joining the business to discover the different jobs you could be doing.

As a UK-wide insurer, we are looking for our graduate talent pool to mirror this and span all across the UK in our regional offices. Your placement could be in either Allianz Commerical , Retail, Speciality, or Engineering. We have offices across the UK, meaning you could be in Glasgow for one placement, then move to one of our Head Offices in Bournemouth or Guildford for your next placement.

Underwriting is the core of Beazley, our Graduate Programme is a 24-month immersive learning experience designed to provide participants with the knowledge and experience needed for a successful career as an Underwriter at Beazley.

Beazley has 5 underwriting divisions, and we are looking for a grad in each area! The recruitment process is done as one ‘underwriting graduate’ pool, but during application we ask if you have a preference for a particular division – you can identify your top 2 preferences, or give no preference at all – either is fine. To help you, we have provided information on each of the divisions below. You will also get to choose a location preference – please note if you have a location preference first, this will automatically remove some of the underwriting division options.

Members of the graduate programme will participate in training rotations across their chosen division’s Underwriting and Business Management functions. This is designed to give you a broad experience resulting in the ability to become a well-rounded Underwriter at Beazley.

Following the successful completion of the programme, graduates will move into a full-time Underwriter role within their chosen division.

Wondering if this is the right opportunity for you? We encourage you to apply if you are keen to develop a career in Underwriting with a leading specialist insurer and meet the entry requirements.

Cyber

Our market leading Cyber insurance offering protects businesses against cyber threats by building resilience and minimising risk.

Beazley is a pioneer in cyber insurance and has led the way in the development of an effective cyber ecosystem which protects clients, before, during and after a cyber incident and in the creation of the market’s first cyber catastrophe bond and war exclusion.

Digital

Within the Digital division we provide access to our specialty small business products via multiple digital placing and servicing channels. This offers flexibility of choice in how to place business with us, in a simple and cost-effective way.

Where other companies may ‘digitise’ legacy systems and continue traditional service line-led underwriting, we took a different approach. We created Beazley Digital in 2022, a dedicated cross-functional team organised around our brokers, their clients and their direct needs: offering a powerful combination of access to our specialty insurance products, empowered underwriters, future-facing customer experience supported by leading technology and thinking.

We operate in UK, US, Canada, France, Germany and Spain writing a range of covers including cyber, E&O, management liability, healthcare, contingency and marine.

Property

The Property Division comprises of six trading teams; Jewellery fine art & specie, High Value Homeowners, Covers, UK & rest of world Commercial Property, North American commercial property and Property Treaty. We are based mainly in London and the US but also have underwriters in Singapore, Germany, France and China.

We work closely with the exposure management team in analysing climate risk as we provide insurance for properties both on the insurance side and also reinsurance side of the industry. We write both on the Lloyd’s platform and through our own company paper.

Specialty

Speciality Risks (SR) is the largest and most diverse of the Beazley divisions. There are 7 trading teams with 27 focus groups that sit beneath these.

SR has underwriters located in the UK, US, Canada, each of our European offices and Singapore so they have access to every way that a Beazley underwriter can place business.

SR writes liability business in each of these areas, providing cover for some of the largest and most well-known organisations in the world as well as also catering to much smaller businesses, often covered under our programmes books. From retail to streaming services and from law firms to celebrities, SR will give you a broad experience to kick start your career.

Marine, Accident & Political (MAP)

Marine, Accident & Political (MAP) Risks insure a wide range of different risks. From shipping to satellites, professional sportspersons to major concert tours, and geopolitical risks across the globe.

Our specialist underwriters are experts in their areas, keeping up to date with the latest developments, understanding the risks that clients face and working to help them mitigate these.
